Dancing Girl, Golconda, late 17th century

Lady Carrying A Peacock, probably Hyderabad, late 17th to early 18th century

Sultans of Deccan India, 1500-1700: Opulance and Fantasy नावाचं .

Tree on the Island of Waqwaq, Golconda, early 17th century

                                    Bidar and Surrounding 356 copy

Birds in a Silver River, probably Aurangabad, late 17th century

Jahangir Shoots the Head of Malik Ambar, Mughal, ca. 1616

Another prominent group attracted to military service in the sultanates was that of the Marathas, the indigenous warrior clans of the western plateau. In a pattern stretching back to the Bahamani era, Maratha Deshmukhs, the hereditary territorial chiefs in the western countryside, not only collected revenue and adjudicated disputes, but they also raised troops and made them available to sultans, who in turn formalized the chief's rights to specified lands, indeed many Maratha clans rose to prominence in tandem with the sultanates."

I am Maratha Deshmukh.

Tree of Music for Daughter -Kalpavruksha Kanyesathi

I was watching an old Lata Mangeshkar interview where she is reminiscing about her father, through his music.

The interviewer asks, "It is said that you have perfect gandhar in your voice and that is a gift from your father?".

And she explains what that means. She says, "the gandhar (ga in the seven notes) that a well-tuned tambora can produce, it is said that I can create the exact same sound with my voice." She then talks some more about who else had perfect gandhar in their voice or rather who else her father believed could create perfect gandhar (she names Bal Gandharva).

It is an old Doordarshan interview, I think - when there used to be a fly in residence in the Mumbai DD studio- (I remember that fly...being the subject of many viewers' letters, questions, and comments at the time) - and the air conditioning was probably malfunctioning, so you see her wiping her face with her handkerchief every now and then. But she speaks with grace and joy about her father and her younger days and there is no sadness or regret that comes across for the extreme hardships and struggle - financial and otherwise that we've heard her family went through while she and her siblings were growing up.

The story of the Mangeshkar family is very well known to maharashtrians: Dinanath Mangeshkar was born in Goa. He was an accomplished theater actor and singer of classical, semi-classical music. He had four daughters  - Lata, Asha, Usha, Meena, and a son Hridaynath. Dinanath passed away when Lata was eleven - leaving his wife and children in penury and socially shunned. The responsibility of caring for the family then fell on Lata's young shoulders -she being the oldest child. Through grit, hard work and their father's gift of music, the siblings then raised themselves out of their difficult circumstances to climb the heights of unimaginable success in the world of music.

It is hard to put in words what maharashtrians feel about the Mangeshkars. They are a household name in the state. The two sisters are often referred to, publicly, as Latadidi and Ashatai - both the suffixes mean older sister (that's what they are called at home by their siblings , I believe). And maybe, although it isn't said openly, marathi -speakers are proud of the family for keeping the flag of marathi flying high for such a long time, in a film industry that is otherwise dominated by hindi- speaking people from the north.

Nevertheless, after receiving generous love from mumbaikars for decades, Latabai became the subject of their ire a few years ago. The Mangeshkar family lives on Pedder road in Mumbai. It is a very busy stretch of road that cuts through some wealthy residential neighborhoods of the city taking commuters, morning and evening, from their homes in north Mumbai to Nariman Point and other business enclaves in the south and back. Some years ago, LM was accused by the media of trying to use her exalted status to block the construction of a flyover that was proposed to ease the traffic congestion.

That furor has now passed. There is no flyover there- yet. And perhaps, one might argue, Pedder Road looks better without one. I don' know if LM still lives there. Some say she lives mostly in Pune now, where the family has built a hospital in memory of her father- the late Dinanath.

*Kalpavruksha Kanyesathi

How often did I hear the story behind the song above from my mother growing up? - Every single time it played on the radio. That it is an expression of Lata's feelings and gratitude toward her father (written by  P. Savalaram).  Roughly translated it says:

you planted the tree of music
for your daughter, baba
and left

it's blossomed now
will you come back to see

After you were gone
you were worshipped
when the seven notes came alive
 your greatness became known
our home by the river
became pilgrimage
without you
(this) temple of riches is godless

sun and moon are your eyes
watching over from far
nothing is lacking now
it's raining good fortune
through your five fingers
you live on

come back just once
and pat our back
come back just once

*Kalpavruksha is a mythical, wish- granting tree. However, I don't think the poet would have meant it that way.  So I translated it as the tree of music.

I am also not sure about the line - gangekathi ghar he apule - our home by the Ganga. I don't know which one of the Mangeshkar family's homes the poet was referring to.  I vaguely remember reading somewhere that they lived in Sangli at one time which is by the river Krishna. But the home that might be construed as pilgrimage -visited by many admirers and temple of riches, I thought, would be their home in Mumbai on Peddar Road which is by the Arabian sea.

Maharashtra Diwas

On the occasion of Maharashtra Diwas (May1), a few old marathi songs :

From the movie Mumbaicha Jawai ( Son -in- law from Mumbai) - the song ka re durawa ka re abola. In the movie, a small-town girl Durga, who has grown up in a wad (big sprawling old house) gets married to a boy from Mumbai and moves to the big city only to discover that her new home is two small cramped rooms in a tenement that she has to share with two other couples - her mother and father- in- law and elder sister and brother- in- law. She frets and fumes at the lack of privacy.  Gently, with love and understanding her new family helps her adjust to her new surroundings.

Why wasn't the movie called Mumbaichi Soon ( Daughter -in -law of Mumbai) I wonder, as the story is more about the girl and her in- laws than her husband and his in -laws. Durga's sister - in -law Manju is singing the song in the above clip.  The words - ka re abola simply mean - why aren't you talking to me?

Are sansar sansar is a poem by Bahinabai Choudhary that was used as song in the movie Manini. Bahinabai (1880 - 1951) was an illiterate village woman who composed poetry orally while performing her daily chores, in the farm as well as at home. They were later written down by her son Sopandev. In school we  learned one of her poems called mana wadhay wadhay. It is a beautiful poem about this mysterious thing called the mind. In it Bahinabai says mind is like a bird -one minute it is on earth and next minute it is soaring high in the sky; mind is like the waves created on water by the wind and mind can be deadly poison worse than the venom of snake or scorpio. At the end of the poem she asks rhetorically -  god, how did you come up with this thing and answers her own question saying it must be something you day -dreamed about. In are sansar sansar, Bahinabai compares sansar - domestic life - to a hot griddle on the stove. You burn your hand first she says before you get to eat the bhakari.

Bhakari eaten with raw onion, fresh green chillies or a simple spicy chutney is the staple food of rural Maharashtra. Cooked without any fat - no oil, no ghee- it is probably one of the healthiest flat breads  - especially if you make it the way it is shown in the song: Take some jwari or bajari grown in your own farm; grind it on the jata (grinding wheel) to make just enough flour to last for a week or two; knead the dough with water and flatten a small ball by hand to make a big thin round bhakari; Cook it on earthen stove.

This song jeevanat hee ghadi reminds me of a phrase my mother used to use: sadichi ghadi modayachi. New sarees especially cottons and silks come crisply folded. Sometimes when my mom bought a new saree, she would not wear it right away but save it for a special occasion or an auspicious day saying, "padvyala navin sadichi ghadi modin"- I'll break the fold of my new sari on Padwa. The first line in the above song says jeevanat hee ghadi asheech rahu de- let the fold of my life remain intact.

The handwoven silk sadi that is the pride of Maharashtra is of course the paithani named after the village Paithan near Aurangabad where they are made. The Wikipedia entry for Paithani says, one of the characteristics of that sadi is the motif of peacock woven in golden thread on its padar (part of the sadi that drapes over the shoulder). In the above song in the first line a girl is asking her aai (mother) to dress her in a new shalu (rich sadi) with dancing golden peacock on its padar. I wonder if poetically, she is in effect asking her mother for a paithani - an extravagant purchase at any age let alone for a young girl. This song is a lavani, a type of folk song from Maharashtra and is sung by Sulochna Chavan, a well known lavani singer.

No list of marathi popular songs can be complete without the above song. It would not be an exaggeration to say that generations of maharshtrian children have taken their first steps tapping their feet to the beat of this balgeet. The first line says nach re mora ambyachya vanat nach re mora nach - dance peacock dance in the mango orchard. Asha Bhosale originally sang this for the movie Devbappa over 50 years ago. Everyone knows that the Mangeshkar sisters Lata and Asha, through their sweet, melodious voice ruled the hindi playback signing world for over five decades. What is probably lesser known outside Maharashtra is that their brother Hridyanath Mangeshkar has rendered some deeply haunting soulful marathi songs like the one below:

For Valentine's Day

Taj Mahal facade : Stock Photo

Recounting her first visit to India in the 1950s, in her new book My Life on the Road,  Gloria Steinem writes, " -  everybody in India seems to sing as part of everyday life  - ".  Perhaps that is the reason Indian moviemakers refuse to make movies without songs. Here are some of my favorite everlasting love songs from hindi films that have stood the test of time.

Jo wada kiya woh nibhana padega - the promise that you made, you will have to keep..., says the first line of this song. The name of the movie is Taj Mahal. In 1632 Emperor Shahajahan commissioned the construction of the Taj Mahal to house the remains of his wife Mumtaz Mahal, who died giving birth to their 14th child. For over 300 years, the grand marble mausoleum has stood over Indians, reminding us of the Mughal emperor's love for his wife. The movie was made in 1963.

The movie Hum Dono was released in 1961 starring Dev Anand and Sadhana. Both the actors are no more. Sadhana died recently, in December in Mumbai. No one thought Dev Anand would ever die -the way he kept reinventing himself acting with younger and younger heroins as he got older. Sadhana popularized the "bangs" in India and the hair style came to be known as the Sadhana cut in her days.

I think Valentine's day came to India with the advent of the internet. What TV couldn't do WWW did - introduced Indians to celebrations like Halloween and Valentine's day. Still, Halloween hasn't caught on with the middle class as much as Valentine's day has and the reason might be the same as why it has not caught on with me much - Indians like me who remember the days when there used to be actual beggars in India who would go from door to door with a begging bowl, can not get terribly excited about their children going door to door with a bowl  - even for candy.

This is a nice video.  I love it as much as the song, probably more. Rarely do you see, on Indian screen, so few colors these days.  The reason it happens here, I believe, is because this song appears in the movie as a dream sequence. As the heroin lays unconscious as a result of some serious trauma, she dreams of uniting with her beloved, finally accepting the fact that it can not happen in reality; as he is engaged to someone else. I marvel at the thought, the time, and the effort that appears to have gone into the making of this song (it was filmed outside India) and the purpose it serves in the movie. Hosh mein chahat ab aayi - love has come to its senses (both literally and figuratively as it turns out in this scene) - the male singer sings at one point.  Tukade dilake hum tum milake phirase jodenge - together we will mend the pieces of (your) broken heart, he promises towards the end of the song.

This is not a love song. The first track, swayamvar jhale sitech (Sita got married), in this set of Geet Ramayan, describes the wedding of Ram and Sita. The story of Ram and Sita is not presented to the children of India as a love story. Rather the story of Ram (the Ramayan) is the story of - duty first, before marital bliss or any other bliss for that matter. Nevertheless, you might hear an older village woman in India, compliment a younger couple by saying- you two match each other like Ram and Sita. And this song is full of romance - thanks to the poet/lyricist GaDiMa (Gajanan Digambar Madagulkar) who paints an elaborate scene of their wedding with his beautiful words.

Geet Ramayan is the story of the Ramayan, rendered in songs in marathi. That was the background score of my teenage years in Mumbai, as my mother would play it on the tape-recorder every morning, before we left for school. The set came in several cassettes and depending on her mood, I think, she chose the one that she wanted to play on a particular morning. Lord Ram was not worshipped as god in our home, as he is in some parts of India. For us, he was the hero of Gadimas's Geet Ramayan. There are 50 odd songs in Geet Ramayan, out of which Swayamvar jhale Siteche is one of my favorites.

There is a marathi saying (or is it a line from a poem, I don't quite remember) that goes: je na dekhe ravi, te dekhe kavi : what the sun can not see (or as I recall our marathi teacher explaining its meaning to us in class : what the eye can not see) the poet can. True to these words Gadima sees through the scenes of Sita's swayamvar and recreates for the listener a picture so vivid, that every time I listen to this song - no matter how many times I have heard it before - I feel as if I am watching that wedding unfold right before my eyes.

In Indian mythology, princesses didn't just get married. They had swayamvar which was similar to a contest. Kings, Princes, warriors from kingdoms near and far would be invited to participate in the swayamvar, which would typically test their skills in archery and whoever won the challenge would be able to wed the princess. Personally, I like the challenge in Draupadi swayamvar more - from that other epic - the Mahabharat. It's more detailed and cleverly conceived, I feel. Relatively speaking the challenge in Sita swayamvar is simple and straightforward and Ram manages to win it by lifting and breaking the immensely heavy, divine bow without much effort.

Swayamvar jhale siteche - the song - starts from that point onwards and describes in rich classical  language what is happening at the wedding, what the father of the bride, the bride herself and the groom are feeling and doing. There is a marathi expression - Dolyat pran aanun waat pahane - waiting for someone with your life in your eyes. In this song the poet says - Sita looks at Ram with all the strength of her being gathered in her eyes I know it sounds very incongruent with today's times. The only time most people have their life in their eyes these days is probably when they are looking at the screen of their electronic device, but Geet Ramayan was written over 60 years ago.

This post started with a verse that says -the promise that you made you will have to keep - in hindi. I will end it with a marathi line that means something similar  -  modu naka vachanas -don't break your promise. Sudhir Phadake, in his sonorous voice sings this song as evocatively as he has sung all the other songs of Geet Ramayan. Gadima may have penned the lyrics but it was Phadake's voice that brought Geet Ramayan into maharashtrian homes, who fondly referred to him as babuji.

King Dasharath, the father of Ram has three wives -Kausalya, who is Ram's mother; Sumitra, who is the mother of Laxman and Shatrughna; and Kaikayee's son is Bharat. In the third track in the above set, Kaikayee reminds her husband of the two boons that he granted her a long time ago. After Ram returns home with his new bride and is about to be crowned as King of the kingdom of Ayodhya, Kaikayee demands that it's the right time for her to get her wishes fulfilled -warning Dasharath not to break the promise that he made. With the first wish she says, her son Bharat becomes king and with the second wish, Ram goes into exile for fourteen years. In a way this song represents a crucial point in the story of the Ramayan but this - don't break your promise - song is not for Valentine"s Day.

I am making a brave attempt here, to translate the gist of a couple of verses from the song - Swayamvar jhale Siteche.  Ram is the descendant of the Sun dynasty and Sita is the daughter of the earth. So the first line says -

It's the union of the sky and the earth.

With her father's permission (Sita) rises (and walks towards Ram)
her feet are eager and so is the (wedding) garland in her hand

as the red light of dawn spreads into the blue sky
the sweet sound of (her) anklets seep into Ram.

From The New Yorker

Flag of India : Stock Photo

On the occasion of India's 67th Republic Day, here is a link to a short article in The NewYorker that neatly sums up the ups and downs in the peace process between India and its next door neighbor in the past decades.

http://www.newyorker.com/news/news-desk/the-pakistani-dystopia?

"Since 9/11, according to congressional reports, U.S. taxpayers have given Pakistan at least eighteen billion dollars, much of it to the military. Last year alone, the U.S. gave Pakistan $1.5 billion dollars. Isn’t it about time we asked ourselves whether this is a good idea?" - From The Pakistani Dystopia in The New Yorker

PK to Piku - Top 10 Songs of 2015

at No. 10 is Chaar kadam from PK:

PK is technically not a 2015 movie. It was released in December 2014. But I saw it in 2015 and Amir Khan managed to keep himself in the news through 2015 and the song is good even if the movie was bad. So I guess it is okay to include it here.

My liking for Amir Khan ebbs and flows with his good and bad movies and songs. From his very first movie and the song that made him famous papa kehate hai, where I thought he was a good new actor. Then Aati kya khandala with Rani Mukhrjee from the movie Ghulam, which I saw mostly in clips shown on the Sunday morning Indian TV shows in New York, was a cute and different song from most we see in hindi films. I didn't like Lagaan despite all the hype and hoopla that surrounded it and never understood why Amir Khan craved an Oscar for that movie so much. Then came Three Idiots which was the first hindi movie my son ever saw and he loved it. Taare Zamin Par was not bad either even though like PK that was a overtly "message" movie.

But PK is a boring film. If you have to explain what you are doing in the movie to the audience like Amir Khan does repeatedly in PK ( "phir hum idhar gaya - udhar gaya", "hamane yeh dekha, woh dekha") to an average viewer like me it says that either the script needs more work or you are trying to cram too many episodes of Satyamev Jayate into one film. OMG starring Paresh Rawal and Akshay Kumar - made probably with a much smaller budget - I thought conveyed a similar message equally effectively and in a lot more entertaining manner than PK.

It' reminded me of a black and white hindi movie I saw on Doordarshan years ago wherein there was a scene where the hero was climbing the stairs and at the same time explaining in the background voiceover (to the audience?) phir mai sidee chadhake upar gaya. And even as a young girl I thought - I can see what you are doing, why are you telling me that tum sidee chadhake upar gaya. PK is like that scene - there is too much of phir mai sidee chadhake uppar gaya type of explaining in that movie.

There was another movie that came out in 2015 that had a character explaining the story to the audience. This time the character was a dog (in PK it was Amir Khan as an alien from outer space) . The movie was Dil Dhadakane Do. And I don't know if it is just an odd coincidence but the voice of the dog explaining the story of Dil Dhadakane Do to the audience is that of Amir Khan's.

at No 9 is Gerua from Dilwale:

Some shots in this video reminded me of the song Kismat se from Pukar - Madhuri Dixit in a pale sky blue (what looks like a beautiful chiffon) saree and Anil Kapoor in a dark overcoat and nothing else but a barren snow-covered landscape stretched beyond horizon behind them made for some stunning visuals in that video.  Gerua is nowhere near as serene as Kismat Se - too many rapid changes in scenery, locales, costumes and colors in a 4 minute video assault your senses. But I wondered if shots of kajol in a clinging plain pastel with pallu flying in the air were not inspired by Madhuri Dixit in  Kismat Se.

In Bajirao Mastani, which was released around the same time as Dilwale, Bhansali seems to have been inspired by his own movie Devadas. Watching the Pinga song from his new film, I couldn't help but notice the similarities between it and his Dola re song from Devdas. First of all aren't the situations similar - two women - in Bajirao Mistani it's kashibai, the wife and Mastani, the lover of Bajirao dancing happily together. In Devdas its Paro and Changdramukhi - the two women in Devdaas's life dancing happily together. Bhansali has toned down the colors and the gaudiness of Dola re in Pinga, but to me the two songs still look more similar than different.

When I saw the song and dance Malhari and heard Bajirao singing the words "dushmanki ... waat lavali",  I almost expected him to mouth, somewhere in the movie, dialogue akin to, "aata majhi satkali". Mercifully, that did not happen! But Malhari with its  filmed -indoors - all -male- dance doesn't look ny different from any of the bar songs we have seen in hindi films over the years.

at No 8 is Hamari adhuri kahani:

The basic premise of this movie makes sense- a woman abandoned by her husband is so trapped in tradition that she is unable to break herself free off the shackles of her non-existent marriage when she meets a man who loves her and wants to be a father to her son. What doesn't make sense is the story of the husband - where does he go, how does he get involved with the naxalites, is he a good or a bad guy- that part of the story feels confused and confusing. But the title song is good - even though this video looks as jumbled up as the story of the husband. Also to me Emran Hashmi and Vidya Balan as a romantic pair seemed even more of a mismatch than Deepika Padukone and Irfaan Khan in Piku. And as an aside, in Mumbai there is a well known college called  Ruparel  (रुपारेल) College, so when Vidya Balan addresses Hashmi as Mr Ruprel ("मिस्टर रुप्रेल, मिस्टर रुप्रेल") in the movie,  I wondered if she was mispronouncing the name Ruparel.

at No 7 is Shaam Shaandaar from Shaandaar:

If it were up to me this song would not have made it to the top 10 list.  It's my son's choice. And since his contribution to the post in invaluable, I have to include his choice here. He wanted this to be at No 1 but I couldn't place it at the top. I think the video is pretty bad.

at No 6 is the Journey song from Piku:

Piku is a nice, funny movie. I could totally relate to Amitabh Bachchan's character. It reminded me of my grandmother who suffered from the same malady as Bachchan does in the movie.  For some older members of my family, the biggest concern of the morning used to be On most days the answer would be नाही झालं and the rest of the morning would then be devoted to turning that नाही झालं into झालं as it is in the movie..  There are several natural remedies recommended in the movie by Irfan's character to turn नाही झालं into झालं as were discussed in my family. The "chair" part looked familiar too.

at No 4 is Zindagi kuch to bata from Bajarangi Bhaijaan:

Bajarangi Bhaijaan is also a "message ' movie in a way but sugar coated with pure light -hearted entertainment.

at No 3 is Bhardo Jholi from Bajarangi Bhaijaan:

at No. 2 is Sapna Jahan from Brothers:

at No 1 is DJwaley babu:

This isn't necessarily the best song but it is different from the other seriously romantic songs. And I like the way an english word DJ is indianised here. Like in India a milkman might be called dudhwaley babu or vegetable seller - bhajiwaley babu, in this song a DJ is called DJwaleybabu. The video is average - not too bad. Is that a real TATA truck or just a prop used in the video, I wonder...

To sum up the year - we saw total 8 hindi movies in 2015. I'd rate them as follows:

Good:
Piku
Bajarangi Bhaijan

Bad:
PK
Hamari Adhuri Kahani
Dil Dhadakane Do
Welcome Back

Not sure (neither good nor bad):
Manjhi - the mountain man
Bajirao Mastani
